If your business imports regulated timber products or processes domestically grown raw logs, you may be legally required to undertake timber due diligence before importing or processing those products.

The Illegal Logging Prohibition Act 2012 and Illegal Logging Prohibition Rules 2024 place clear obligations on businesses to gather information, assess the risk of illegal logging, maintain records and, where necessary, undertake risk mitigation.

The education-first transition period has now concluded. Businesses are expected to have a compliant due diligence system in place. The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) has a range of compliance and enforcement powers, including the publication of serious or repeated contraventions and the use of scientific timber identification to verify species and origin claims.

AFISC has updated its practical Timber Due Diligence Toolkit to reflect the Illegal Logging Prohibition Rules 2024, helping businesses understand their obligations and implement a documented due diligence system aligned with current legislative requirements.
