Furniture Passport Australia System (FPAS)

The Furniture Passport Australia System (FPAS) is AFISC’s latest initiative to enhance transparency and accountability across the furnishing supply chain. This innovative tool assigns a digital record to each product, detailing its material origins, compliance certifications, environmental impact, and potential for repair, reuse or recycling. By supporting traceability, the FPAS helps manufacturers, retailers, procurers and consumers make informed choices, promotes circularity, and ensures a cleaner, more sustainable furniture lifecycle. As an industry leader, AFISC is proud to integrate the FPAS, driving change toward a fully transparent, sustainable future in the Australian furnishing industry.

Sustainability

Furniture disposal accounts for a staggering 30% of all waste in Australian landfills, highlighting the urgent need for change in the industry. As awareness of environmental issues grows, so does the significance of sustainable furniture. At the forefront of this change is the Australian Furnishing Industry Stewardship Council (AFISC), an initiative led by the Australian Furniture Association (AFA). AFISC’s mission is to embed sustainable practices throughout the industry, driving progress toward a circular economy. AFISC is committed to exploring the impact, materials, processes, and innovations driving the sustainable furniture sector in Australia.

PFAS Chemicals and the Urgent Need for Sustainable Procurement Policy Compliance

The Australian furniture industry is at a crossroads with the impending expansion of the Environmentally Sustainable Procurement (ESP) Policy by the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment, and Water (DCCEEW). From 1 July 2025, this policy will expand its scope to include furniture, fittings, equipment, and textiles procured at or above $1 million, mandating reporting on sustainability credentials.
